Default AR question

Im debating getting an AR and need to start somewhere. Is it easier to buy a base gun an add on or build from scratch?

I've built a few. Not as many as some of the other folks here but here's my $.02 worth.

From what I've found, it's most economical to buy a stripped lower, build it, and then purchase a complete upper.

I built this one last week and have less than $450 in it. Anderson lower and PSA Freedom Magpul build kit. Pretty decent little beater gun.

What's the purpose of the rifle? Plinking? Home defense? Hunting? Also, what's your budget? I usually recommend someone buy one and learn the platform if you're not already familiar with it. A S&W entry level rifle can be had for less than $600. If you're wanting something geared more towards HD, look at Daniel Defense, BCM, or Sons of Liberty Gunworks. Those will run in the $1000-1200 range. You can also find a Colt 6920 for around $800 if you shop around, but lots of guys poopoo on Colt nowadays for whatever reason.

I saw NIB Smith and Wesson MP15 Sport IIs with dust cover and forward assist for 609.00 a while back. Lots of used ones in the 500 range.

They have by far the best prices I've seen on pretty much everything.

If that's the case, I would go with a duty grade factory rifle. Built guns can be finicky. If it comes down to your life depending on it, you want the best you can afford. BCM, Daniel Defense, SOLGW, and Colt would all make sufficient patrol rifles.

No, but that one I brought out to your house with the suppressor did. It's just like this one.

If you're authorized to carry a personally owned rifle then I agree with Piggy. LMT is another option that's not stupid priced like Daniel Defense or LWRC. For plinking I'd just get whatever.

I know most people know this, but remember to budget for an optic, a 2 point sling (my preference by far) and gun light if it's for duty or a true defensive rifle. I also prefer a midlength gas system to carbine because it's a little smoother to shoot. Later you can add a nice trigger if you want it.
