Default Youth Weekend Success

This past Saturday was a pretty damn special day for my boy Lane and I. Lane has been plugging away very seriously trying to get his first turkey. He’s had some extremely close calls, but still hadn’t pulled the trigger. I’ve brought Lane up hunting turkeys without the use of a blind and countless decoys. I wanted him to earn his first bird. Not hand it to him on a platter. I don’t apologize for my views on hunting wild turkeys. I believe they should be hunted this way.

Well.. Saturday morning we found ourselves at The Borck Farm. Tom Borck is by far the most generous person Ive ever met. Proud and honored to call him a friend. Lane and I eased into a food plot and patiently awaited day break. As grey light started to ease across the landscape, a gobbler sounded off a good ways off the property. Immediately afterwards, what sounded like a trio of gobblers sounded off!! They were off the property but within 150 or so yards. Hens started tree yelling and cackling too.

I got Lane set up on a hurricane damaged oak on the edge of the plot. There wasn’t room for us to sit side by side so I had to drop down a 3ft or so terrace behind the tree. I threw my old featherflex hen out in the plot, and came back and got situated. I pulled out my wingbone and let the gobblers and hens know we were there. I was greeted with an immediate response from all of them.

I rattled off a few more yelps and then pulled out a mouth call and let out a fly down cackle.

Soon.. the woods were filled with silence.. Around 8am.. I grabbed the wingbone and clucked. “Gobbble!!!” First gobble from the ground. I yelped a bit afterwards with no replies. Birds still sounded like they were across the property line.. Figured they were henned up. 10 min later, Lane says, “Don’t move Dad...”. I shifted my eyes hard left and I see a blue/white head across the food plot!!!! Lane had his gun in his lap... I’m below Lane 3ft and I can only see his head down to where his beard was popping out of his chest. I also saw bits and pieces of more turkeys behind him in the pines. I told Lane, “You have to make your move..”. The gobbler was staring our way. He then puffed into a semi strut and spun around. Lane picked his gun up half way and the gobbler turned back our way. Lane froze... The gobbler started to turn again and Lane threw the gun up. The gobbler got nervous, took one step to walk away and “BOOM!”

Turkeys were flying everywhere. Apparently we brought in the whole flock! I jumped up because when Lane shot, the gobbler disappeared from my line of sight. I saw dust flying and took off running. Sure enough, the gobbler was face down in the sand, and finished!!! I flipped him over and three beards!!!! Turns out, Lane informed me that there were two other gobblers and 6 or so hens that I couldn’t see! We just soaked it all in! Happy just doesn’t describe how we both felt. It was deeper than that. By far the finest moment of my hunting career.
